Chastain Park History & Overview
The area was once inhabited by Creek Indians until it was acquired by Dekalb County in 1840 and then used for town hall meetings. Fulton County purchased the land in 1900, and nine years later, an almshouse for the poor was constructed. In 1940, the construction of residential housing in the area was proposed, eventually becoming the North Fulton neighborhood.
Troy G. Chastain was the architect of the project and commissioned a 1,000-acre development that included a 268-acre park complete with an Olympic Swimming pool, sports fields, bathhouses, horse stables, and more. Initially named North Fulton Park, the area was renamed Chastain Park after Troy passed away in 1944, a year before the completion of the project.
