Mountain Park, Georgia is a suburb of Atlanta and a census-designated place (CDP) in Gwinnett County located about 30 minutes east of Atlanta on US 78-W. The community was one of the earliest residential growth areas of Gwinnett County, being close to Atlanta. Gwinnett County was established in 1818, but the Creek and Cherokee Indians lived in the Mountain Park area before that. It’s unincorporated because there is a town by the name of Mountain Park north of Roswell that was incorporated in 1927, and efforts to incorporate the area fizzled out.
Mountain Park CDP is defined as a concentration of population by the US Census Bureau for statistical purposes only. The area was previously called Trickum and many residents still refer to the Five Forks Trickum Road and Rockbridge intersection as Trickum. The name ‘Trickum’ refers to the desire of the area’s residents to trick the Union army as it foraged through the area during the Civil War.
The Mountain Park area is located about an hour down I-285 from the most visited tourist site in the state of Georgia, Stone Mountain Park, owned by the state of Georgia and managed by Herschend Family Entertainment, and about 53 minutes from Forest Park via I-75.
