How to Protect and Pack Dishes for a Long Distance Move

Learning how to pack dishes properly can save you from heartbreak when unpacking at your new home. Moving fragile kitchenware across long distances requires careful planning and the right techniques. An excellent moving team knows that proper packing makes all the difference between intact dishes and broken pieces. This guide covers everything from choosing supplies to loading your moving truck safely. Follow these steps to keep your dishes protected during the entire journey.

Choose the Right Packing Supplies

Getting the right supplies before you start packing saves time and protects your dishes better. Purchase sturdy corrugated boxes in various sizes to accommodate plates, bowls, and other kitchenware. Ensure boxes are clean, dry, and odor-free to prevent any residue from transferring to your dishes. Get quality packing paper or bubble wrap to wrap each item individually. Dish dividers or cell kits help keep items separated inside boxes. Use strong packing tape to seal boxes completely and prevent them from opening during transport.

Wrap Each Dish Properly

When you pack dishes, wrapping each piece correctly prevents chips and breaks during the move. Place packing paper on a flat surface and put one dish in the center. Fold the corners over the dish to create a square covering. Tape the paper securely so the entire dish stays covered. Delicate glassware requires an additional layer of bubble wrap before being wrapped in paper. Foam pouches offer an extra layer of protection for your most delicate items. The goal is to create enough cushioning to absorb bumps and jolts during the trip.

Pack Dishes Securely in Boxes

Once everything is wrapped, pack your boxes carefully to prevent shifting and breaking. Start with a thick layer of bubble wrap or packing paper at the bottom of each box. Stand dishes upright, like records, rather than stacking them flat - this provides better support and reduces breakage. Fill empty spaces with crumpled paper or bubble wrap to prevent items from shifting around. Seal boxes tightly with packing tape once they're full. Mark each box clearly as 'fragile' so handlers know to handle it with care.

Label Boxes With Fragile Stickers

Fragile stickers indicate that everyone handling your boxes should use extra care. These bright labels help movers spot delicate items immediately. Proper labeling ensures that your boxes are stacked on top of heavier items, rather than underneath. When you arrive at your new place, you'll know which boxes to unpack first and handle gently. Put stickers on multiple sides of each box so they're visible no matter how the boxes get turned.

Use Cushioning Material in Boxes

Extra padding inside boxes absorbs shocks and prevents dishes from clashing. Line the bottom of every box with a thick layer of bubble wrap or packing paper before adding dishes. Wrap each dish individually and fill the spaces between items with more cushioning. Put heavier plates on the bottom and lighter items on top. Add padding between each layer of dishes you stack. Fill any remaining gaps at the top before sealing boxes to prevent contents from shifting.

Load Boxes Carefully in the Moving Truck

How you load the truck affects whether your dishes survive the trip intact. Place heavier boxes, such as those containing plates and cookware, on the floor of the truck first. Use straps or a rope to secure boxes in place to prevent them from sliding around during driving. Fill the gaps between boxes with soft items, such as towels or blankets, for extra cushioning. Keep fragile boxes on top of sturdy ones and away from heavy furniture. Secure everything well before closing the truck to prevent movement on the road.
