How to Pack Records for Moving: Protect Your Collection

Moving your vinyl and CD collection requires careful planning and the right approach. Your records represent years of collecting and carry both monetary and sentimental value. This guide walks you through everything you need to know about packing and moving your music collection safely. From selecting boxes to loading the moving truck, each step matters when protecting these fragile items. Following these proven methods or hiring a trusted moving company that specializes in handling delicate collections will help your records arrive damage-free.

Choosing the Right Packing Materials

Start with quality cardboard boxes designed for moving records. Standard moving boxes are suitable, but record-specific boxes provide better support for the weight of the records. Wrap each record individually in packing paper or bubble wrap for protection against scratches and impacts. Use strong packing tape to seal boxes completely so they don't pop open during the move. Label every box with what's inside and mark them as fragile. The right materials make all the difference between records that arrive safely and those that get damaged.

Sorting and Organizing Your Records

Before packing, organize your collection by genre, artist, or alphabetically. This makes unpacking at your new place much easier. Review each record to ensure it's in the correct group. Use dividers or sticky notes to mark different sections in your collection. Set aside any rare pressings or particularly fragile records that need extra attention. Taking time to organize now saves you headaches later and helps you keep track of your entire collection.

Properly Packing Individual Records

Put each vinyl record in a protective sleeve before packing. Place two pieces of cardboard on either side of vinyl records to prevent warping. Store CDs in their original jewel cases or special CD sleeves. Stand records vertically in the box rather than laying them flat. Fill empty spaces with crumpled packing paper to stop records from sliding around. Never pack records horizontally or at an angle, as this can cause permanent warping. The vertical position mimics how records sit on a shelf and is the safest way to transport them.

Safely Storing Packed Records in Boxes

Stack boxes carefully, placing the heaviest ones at the bottom. Keep records standing upright in every box to avoid bending. Place packing material between boxes when stacking them to prevent shifting. Store boxes in areas with low humidity and moderate temperatures. Don't stack boxes too high, or they might topple over. Keep the weight reasonable in each box so they're easier to carry without breaking. Proper stacking protects your collection during storage and transport.

Labeling and Handling Packed Boxes

Write clearly on the top and sides of each box with a permanent marker. List what's inside, like "Jazz Vinyl" or "80s Rock CDs." Note which room each box should go to in your new home. This detailed labeling helps you locate specific records quickly after a move. It also indicates which boxes require gentle handling. Good labels prevent confusion and reduce the chance of boxes ending up in the wrong room or being handled roughly.

Loading and Transporting Your Records

Place record boxes vertically in the moving vehicle just like they sit in the box. Make sure boxes can't shift or slide during the drive. Keep records out of direct sunlight and try to maintain a consistent temperature. If you're hiring movers, explain how fragile your collection is and show them the fragile labels. You might want to transport your most valuable records yourself in your own vehicle. Drive carefully and avoid sudden stops or sharp turns that could jostle the boxes. Taking these precautions means your records will arrive ready to play.
