Moving in Atlanta 101

Everything you've ever wondered about hiring movers, answered honestly
Booking and Scheduling
Most Atlanta customers book 2 to 3 weeks ahead. However, if you're moving at the end of the month, during summer (May through September), on a weekend, or around a holiday, earlier is better. Booking early gives you more scheduling flexibility, better crew availability, and a smoother planning process.

Closing date flexibility: If your closing date isn't completely firm yet, it's always a good idea to talk through rescheduling options ahead of time. At Wirks, any adjustment fees are based on how close the change is to the move date, so the more notice we have, the easier and more affordable it tends to be.
It happens often in real estate. Here's what we can do:

● Adjust arrival windows
● Temporarily hold items on the truck
● Move items into secure storage

However, if loading starts late in the day and the move is large, it may require an additional day. Fatigue increases damage risk and we prioritize safe working hours. The safest strategy: if possible, schedule overlapping ownership or virtual closings.
Yes, or someone who knows the move intimately. We conduct four walkthroughs:

● Arrival walkthrough
● Pre-departure walkthrough
● Arrival at destination
● Final walkthrough

These checkpoints prevent forgotten items, misplaced furniture, and accidental truck leftovers. Having a decision-maker present keeps the day smooth.
Preparation directly impacts cost and stress. Helpful steps:

● Pack and seal boxes before arrival
● Remove items from furniture
● Label destination rooms clearly
● Plan furniture placement ahead of time
● Disconnect electronics
● Clear walkways

If movers must wait for decisions, that time is billable. The more decisions made ahead of time, the smoother and more cost-efficient your move will be.
Packing and Protection
Yes, partial or full. Items packed by owner cannot be fully covered under valuation because we cannot verify packing quality. When we pack, materials are industry-grade, items are documented, and coverage applies. We frequently pack TVs, china and dishes, lamps, artwork, and high-value items. If budget is a concern, we can strategically pack only fragile items.
Protection begins immediately. We use:

● Floor runners in high-traffic areas
● Door frame protection
● Blanket wrapping
● Cardboard wall guards in tight turns
● Painter's tape for safe adhesion

Special surfaces such as cork floors or refinished hardwood require additional prep. Let us know in advance. Protection is proactive, not reactive.
The safest method is a proper TV carton. If we pack it, it is covered under valuation and secured properly in the truck. If not, it will be padded, but a valuation disclaimer must be signed. This protects both you and us from unclear liability.
Specialty and Complex Items
Yes, depending on weight and access.

● Under 600 lbs, ground-level: usually straightforward
● Over 600 lbs: requires a lift-gate truck
● Slopes, mud paths, or stairs: may require additional crew

Transparency about access prevents surprises. Let us know your specific situation during the estimate.
Yes, upright, baby grand, and grand. We remove legs, use piano boards, fully blanket wrap, and secure strategically. Tuning is typically required after relocation.
Yes, but high-value items must be declared. Items over $100 per pound must be declared under DOT guidelines. Antiques often have pre-existing repairs, hidden fractures, and structural weaknesses. Communication protects you.
Local moves: yes, though plants are not insurable. Interstate moves: no, due to DOT restrictions. Heat and cold exposure can stress plants. Many customers transport them personally.
Storage
Yes, temperature-controlled, containerized storage. Benefits include:

● 24/7 monitored facility
● Controlled access
● Vault system (you pay only for space used)
● Prorated billing
● Protection under valuation while stored

Private storage units do not offer this level of protection.

Yes, by appointment with 48 hours notice. Warehouse handling fees apply due to vault re-stacking requirements.
Billing and Payment
On hourly moves, time starts at arrival and ends after reassembly and cleanup. Billed in 15-minute increments with a 2 to 3 hour minimum. Drive time from our warehouse is flat-rated. This keeps billing straightforward and predictable.
Hourly works best when variables exist. Flat-rate works best when inventory is fixed, access conditions are known, and budget certainty matters. Flat-rate shifts planning risk to us. Hourly offers flexibility. We help you choose based on your priorities.
Accepted payment methods:

● Credit card (3% convenience fee)
● Cash
● Cashier's check
● Money order
● Personal check (local moves only)

Note: Interstate moves do not accept personal checks.
For hourly local moves, payment is collected at job completion. For flat-rate and interstate moves, payment is collected before unloading. On flat-rate jobs, the total is known in advance so there is no reason to wait. On interstate moves, collecting before unloading protects both parties.
Tips are appreciated but never required. Industry standard is $10 per hour per mover or up to 20% of the total move cost. Tip what feels appropriate based on performance.
Claims and Valuation
Important context: Valuation coverage is governed by FMCSA (Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration) regulations and the Georgia Department of Public Safety. These rules apply to every licensed mover, not just Wirks. The timelines and coverage levels below are not our policies. They are the industry standard every legitimate carrier follows.

● Local moves: 90 days to file a claim from delivery date
● Interstate moves: 120 days to file a claim from delivery date
● We have 90 days to acknowledge and process once a claim is received

Basic liability coverage: $0.60 per pound per item (required minimum under FMCSA rules)

Full value protection: Reimbursement based on declared value of the item

Our process: we investigate thoroughly, interview crew, review documentation, and attempt repair before replacement. One claim form per move ensures a full and complete review.
Weather and Real-World Conditions
Yes. Atlanta sees rain frequently and postponing every rainy day isn't realistic. We use extra shrink wrap, floor protection, strategic team rotation, and immediate wrapping and unwrapping of items. Only severe safety risks such as ice or dangerous storms cause rescheduling. Rain alone does not cancel a move.
Apartments, Condos, and Access
Yes. Important considerations include elevator reservations, Certificates of Insurance (COIs) required by some buildings, parking restrictions, and long carry distances. Transparency about access prevents underbidding and ensures your estimate is accurate.
Reducing Stress on Move Day
Moving is physically demanding but mentally exhausting too. To reduce stress:

● Plan furniture layout ahead of time
● Pack essentials separately so they're accessible immediately
● Board pets if possible
● Plan meals for the day
● Stay hydrated
● Communicate what matters most to the crew

Decision fatigue is real. The more decisions you make before move day, the easier move day becomes. Trust the team you hired.
