Helping Kids Feel at Home: Exploring Your New Community Together

How to Explore Your New Neighborhood with Young Children

Moving to a new neighborhood is a big change for kids, and it’s natural for them to feel a bit uneasy about their unfamiliar surroundings. However, you can transform the experience into an exciting adventure with a few creative activities. Here are some ideas to help young children explore and feel at home in their new environment.

  1. Go on a Listening Walk.

Inspired by the book, The Listening Walk, by Paul Showers, a listening walk is a great way to engage your child’s senses and introduce them to their new surroundings. As you walk, encourage your child to listen carefully and identify different sounds: birds chirping, cars driving by, leaves rustling, or the wind blowing. This helps children become more aware of their environment while calming move related anxieties.

  1. Create a Neighborhood Map

Map-making is a wonderful activity that helps children visually understand their new surroundings. Encourage your kids to draw or create a map of their neighborhood, marking key places like their house, local parks, nearby stores, and new friends’ homes. You can make it even more fun by creating a 3D map using recycled materials.

After creating the map, ask your children to share a story about one of the places they included. This could be a story about something that happened recently or something they imagine happening in the future.

  1. Organize a Neighborhood Scavenger Hunt

Make exploring fun by organizing a scavenger hunt! Create a list of things for your child to find, such as a red mailbox, a dog, a bicycle, or a specific type of tree. This activity not only helps kids learn more about their neighborhood but also encourages observation and interaction.

  1. Introduce Your Kids to Local Landmarks

Take time to visit nearby landmarks, such as playgrounds, libraries, and community centers. Let your children take pictures of these places to create a personal photo album or scrapbook. You can also encourage them to write captions or draw pictures to go along with their photos, turning the activity into a creative storytelling exercise.

  1. Join Local Events and Groups

Many communities host local events, such as farmers’ markets, story time at the library, or family-friendly festivals. Attending these events can help your child feel more connected to the community. Additionally, check for local playgroups or children’s classes where your kids can make new friends and feel more at home.

Stories to Help Kids Navigate Moving and New Adventures

Introducing children to stories that address the challenges of moving to a new place and managing big emotions can provide comfort and understanding during times of change. These books can also inspire curiosity and creativity as kids explore their new neighborhood, helping them feel more connected to their surroundings.

Books About Moving Recommended for Children Under 10:

  • Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Mean It!) Going to Move by Judith Viorst – A humorous and relatable story about a boy who is determined not to leave his home and friends.
  • The Berenstain Bears' Moving Day by Stan and Jan Berenstain – A comforting tale that follows the Bear family as they move to a new tree house, helping children understand that moving can lead to new adventures.
  • When Sadness is at Your Door by Eva Eland – A gentle book that helps children identify and manage feelings of sadness by personifying it as a visitor.
  • Big Feelings by Suzanne Kaufman – An encouraging story that explores how children can navigate and express overwhelming emotions.
  • Llama Llama Mad at Mama by Anna Dewdney – A story about dealing with frustration, perfect for helping young children process their emotions during a stressful time like moving.
